This site was designed to share favorite videos between folks engaged in higher education. In order to use the site, you have done all you need to do just by showing up. To contribute to the site, please join and let us know you are here.

Please feel free to use the videos you see here, update links that you find missing, and contribute your own favorites. Consider including an introduction to the video, the embed code, and a clean link so the text you provide can be used by others with minimal added effort.

Don’t upload your higher ed video to YouTube (or other video-sharing websites) before doing these 5 simple things

Suggestions include:

Make your video visual, short and fast-paced
Include a call to action (or at least a web address) at the end of your video
Provide contact information for the media
Play the video-sharing game by the rules, make your videos embeddable

Embedding Videos in Desire2Learn (D2L)

Create a new message or reply to an existing one.

Just below and to the left of the message edit area - click the "Edit HTML Source" icon (it resembles a piece of paper with a circle in the lower-right corner). This causes a new window to open with a lot of editing options.

In the new window, you will see a lot of source code that may make no sense. Don't fool around with it unless you understand HTML code. Go to the very bottom of the page before the </body> sign and left-click the mouse to insert the cursor there.

Go to YouTube, Metacafe, TeacherTube, or another video site and get the video code.

There is usually a link for the page the video is on

EXAMPLE

and a link for the embed code

paste in the embed code

in the lower left corner, click on UPDATE.

In the initial editing window, you should see an approximately 1-inch square where the video was inserted (it will show momentarily - read on)

in the lower-left corner where you saw "Edit HTML Source", look to the right for the small icon that looks like a piece of paper with a magnifying glass -- that's Preview - click on it.

A new window will pop up to show you what it looks like.

You can move the embedded video (the one-inch square) around like a picture (either left click on it and hold while you drag it somewhere and release it or highlight it and cut (Ctrl C) then go to where you want to paste it and Ctrl-V.

To Post the new message, choose Save.

VOILA!

Embedding videos in Blackboard

Create a new message or reply to an existing one. Just above and to the right of the message edit area - click the "Enable HTML Creator" button. This causes a Java interface to load with a lot of editing options. Change the view -- in the bottom left corner you will see two choices - "WSIWYG" (what you see is what you get) and "Source View." Choose Source view Go to YouTube, Metacafe, other video sites and
get the video code. There is usually a link for the page the video is on EXAMPLE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpiI0WIo6Io and a link for the embed code EXAMPLE <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lpiI0WIo6Io&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x2b405b&color2=0x6b8ab6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lpiI0WIo6Io&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x2b405b&color2=0x6b8ab6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
paste in the embed code switch back to WYSIWIG Preview Post NOTE: . . . this worked in one classroom, but not another. If it does not show a video when you follow these steps, it's probably an administrative limit, not a Blackboard restriction. You may see "Forbidden HTML Content" at the top when you preview -Try this elsewhere . . .
